There is a Bug/Feature in Minecraft where you can break the Portal while traveling through.
The trick is to place a bucket of water/lava right before being teleported. Quite hard to do by hand, but probably easily automateable.
This can be useful, when relinking portals, because portal linking tend quite frequently to break.
